Confederate Park - The Rose Arbor
The Rose Arbor was a feature of this park in days gone by, as the antique postcard on the right shows, but it also felt the ravages of time.
The work of planting the roses was carried out by volunteers from the Woman's Club, SPAR (Springfield Preservation and Revitalization Council), the Springfield Garden Club, and interested residents. The cost of planting these beautiful roses was partly defrayed by $20 donations, which each provided one rose bush and fertilizer.

Woman of the South

The Woman of the South statue was created in 1914-1915 by noted New York sculptor Allen George Newman (1875-1940). Newman was known for his work with military statues; this may be the only woman Newman sculpted.
But, time took its toll on this beautiful monument. The Springfield Woman's Club raised the money for its restoration, and the statue has now been returned to its original beauty.

Klutho Park
Mary Dillon Memorial Fountain
The Mary Dillon Memorial Fountain in Klutho Park is a beautiful scuplture created in 1907 by Adian Pillars. The fountain was commissioned by the Springfield Woman's Club in honor of their late founder, Mary Dillon.
As years passed, the fountain fell into disrepair and was almost forgotten. However, dedicated research by a Club member indicated that parts of the fountain were available and it could be restored.
This was a lengthy task but was finally accomplished, and the fountain now stands in its original place.
Many of the bricks shown at the base of the fountain were provided by donations. Each of those bricks has a dedication.
back to top Baseball Field
Thanks to the generous support of Comcast Corporation, the Springfield Improvement Association and Woman's Club was able to upgrade the ball field in Klutho Park by installing bleacher stands and an overhead sunshade.
Improvement to our parks and recreational structures is a particular mission of the Club, as it promotes intergenerational activities that enhance the quality of community within Springfield. |
